Now That The Budget Is Over, Why Isn’t It Over?
October 18, 2022🏛️ What to Look for in Your 1782 Notice from DLGF
Each year, Indiana’s Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) issues a 1782 Notice to local government units as part of the budget certification process. This notice is your final opportunity to review and respond to proposed budget, levy, and rate adjustments before they are certified. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of it.
📬 What Is the 1782 Notice?
The 1782 Notice is an electronic document sent to designated officials in each taxing unit. It outlines the DLGF’s proposed final budget figures based on your submitted forms and the certified assessed values from the county auditor.
🔍 Key Items to Review
- Certified Budget, Levy, and Tax Rate: These are the final figures proposed by DLGF. Compare them to what your unit adopted to ensure accuracy.
- Adjustments Made by DLGF: Look for any changes resulting from assessed value updates or calculation corrections.
- Revenue Estimates: Review the projected revenues, especially miscellaneous revenues, to confirm they align with your expectations and prior submissions.
- Debt Service Funds: Confirm that debt service levies match your obligations. Errors here can affect your ability to meet debt payments.
- Maximum Levy Limits: Check that your unit’s levy does not exceed the statutory maximum. If it does, DLGF will reduce it.
- Appeal Status: If your unit submitted a levy appeal, verify that it’s reflected in the notice.
When you receive your 1782 Notice, pay close attention to the following:
